Kogin Sashi is one of Japan's traditional sashiko (stitching) techniques that originated in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture about 300 years ago.
In the late Edo period, farmers were only allowed to wear hemp clothing.
Farm women stitched hemp fabric with cotton threads to keep warm and make it stronger.
The basic patterns are very simple, but the their combination creates a variety of elegant and beautiful designs.
The technique has been passed down from mother to daughter.
